		<description>
Since 2021, Cammaert has developed a research practice titled Archival Branches, which explores the layered roles and and resonances of the archive within (her) artistic practice(s). This research questions the traditional and institutional logic of the archive, aiming to turn archival thinking inside out by infusing it with vitality, aesthetic experience, memory, storytelling, and exchange.
Archival Branches serves as a rhizomatic structure for diverse outcomes—such as creating new works from archived photographic material, conducting workshops, collaborating with artists, institutions, and art academies, and engaging in exhibitions, interviews, and theoretical research

On this page Archival Branches takes the digital form of a practice for recycling past visual material into the creation of new work.
It is a dynamic platform where forgotten images, text and other objects can come to life and relate to each other and to this digital and public environment.
At times, the page will be almost empty, showing just one photograph. At other the page takes the form of a blog, displaying associative images, ideas and research.

Evelien Cammaert (Brussels, 1986) is a visual and performance artist. She studied photography (BA, Luca Brussels, Narafi, 2010) and performance
(BA, MA at the Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts, 2016, 2021). From her background and studies in these disciplines grew a fascination for interactions that take place between the realities of the different media and contexts she works with. Her research focuses on the relationships between image and memory, landscape and the experiencing body and results in performances and installations, videos, prints and objects.
With a focus on our perception of time and a phenomenological approach to our sensory truths, she seeks to pull herself and the viewer out of daily acceleration in her creative process and presentations. She considers deceleration as a vehicle to establish deep concentration and an inquisitive attitude. Out of her photography, she often creates dark, intimate environments and compositions in which she explores how a physical and emotional relationship can emerge with photographs and the light, colours and atmosphere they emit.

In a space midway
between exhibition, slide show and performance, you venture into twilight
darkness. You are invited to spend time with analogue projected images and
sounds in a scenography that is slowly and constantly changing.Performers operate
slide projectors and make images appear, disappear and travel through space on
quasi-architectural spatial elements that are reminiscent of chamber screens
but equally act as filters for light and for, the projected images, which
mostly seem to do their best to fade, as memories and also slides do when they
exist for a long time. The environment also
changes. In the in-between space, new places keep emerging, little corners and
squares bare different atmospheres each time. Everywhere there are spaces for
you to sit or lie down.

 Different levels of
abstraction and recognisability, visual and audible, are placed next to, over
and opposite each other. Projections show a photographed reality in picturesque
images that evoke dreamy memories. The images appear alongside more abstract,
graphic compositions. The narrative potential is perceptible but mostly remains
unresolved in a quest for atmospheric sophistication and spatial precision.A soundtrack live
created evokes its own space, with dynamic sound extracts referring to a
natural environment, a landscape, a garden.

As a viewer, you feel
your attention meander through colour and light in a space where sounds of
howling wind, synthetic crickets and a buzzing sinus tone almost bring the
pictures to life. You witness a slow and meticulous compositional process. Images are carefully
brought into resonance with time, space and sound, while you stroll to find new
ways and places in space. The longer you walk around, sit and lie down in this garden of colour and
light, the more layers, connections and aspects reveal themselves.

For this installation
and performance, Evelien Cammaert started from a search for places that acquire
meaning through the atmosphere they breathe. The artist undertakes
her creative process slowly, carefully and intuitively, travelling around,
relating to the landscape in her own particular way and looking at places and
photographs in an immersive way to unravel how they present themselves to her
perception at that moment. It is this way of looking at the world that Evelien
Cammaert wants to share with the viewer. Over a period of three years, she
photographed two 35mm rolls of film of analogue slides of landscapes, gardens
and houses. The choice of analogue photography reflects the deceleration in the
artist's meticulous working process and in the pace of the performance to which
you are also invited as a spectator.

Grammatica is an installation and performance in which various
lines are plotted between the performers, the audience, the tactile qualities
of the chosen materials and their interaction with light, colour, space and
time. An artistic creative process unfolds on the spot, within the rules of the
installation that looks like a cross between a painter's studio and a
laboratory. The second dialogue starts there: the public is
invited to observe the makers in this process. The virtual walls of the studio
break open and it shows itself in all its vulnerability. Finally, there is the eye of the camera, which
from a fixed and untouchable position draws a frame around images in which
nothing indicates the presence of the makers. He sees only the tableaux that
arise from matter, movement and light as an ever-changing, almost painterly but
dynamic end product. This is where a third dialogue is initiated, one that has
a rather inward-looking character and generates an almost meditative
experience. This may allow the public an impression of what the performers
themselves experience during the process.

In the spring of 2016 Evelien Cammaert made a performance
/installation called Tiny Things, Pretty Far Away The piece combines
performance, with photography, sound –and set design. The result is a
time-warping experience.

In
this complex work the spectator is invited into a small space, built within a
large industrial hall. Here he is presented with a video-projection consisting
of photographs on the one side, a peephole with a monocular on the other.
Through the hole we witness the performer as she constantly repeats the same
actions and trajectory over and over again, until an image appears in the back
of the hall after three hours… one that is repeated on the screen inside, as if
the box were a camera obscura.

	Absorbing Exposure

&#60;img width="1920" height="1280" width_o="1920" height_o="1280" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8920ee8b0296cb4170a81dd77318dd757321c112e88c7474d6fa85d29f064056/AEstudy1_1-1.jpg" data-mid="62462328" border="0" data-scale="72" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8920ee8b0296cb4170a81dd77318dd757321c112e88c7474d6fa85d29f064056/AEstudy1_1-1.jpg" /&#62;

Absorbing Exposure is a photographical
performance, searching for a sublime moment that has already passed. How do light and time influence our experiences and
later our memories? Are we able, by shining a new light on them in a
different time, to allow passed experiences to exist in a parallel world of
images?During the performance, live pictures are taken in the
space (and therefore time) where the performance takes place. By means of
photographical techniques and projections the memories of the camera and those
of the performers as well as the audience are transposed and redirected into
time. Evelien Cammaert attempts to trace moments from the past, relocate them
and finally frame them, before they once again are swallowed by the dark. While
an increasing amount of traces are left behind, images are caused to melt
together with time. Lifting each other towards a new level of existence.

Eat Wood (the title refers to a skiing expression for smashing into a tree) is the makers’ translation to a performance, of a circular journey, a road trip through natural landscapes in which you keep ending up in the same place you started. This is a performance that consists purely of images passing before the viewers eyes as two performers ongoing alter the scenograpy using everyday objects to create a mystical universe.

Slowblinking Eyes is performance trying to slip away in between different worlds. In which time is zoomed in on…in an attempt to reenact past experiences time gets frozen, enlarged and turned around. Events disappear or reappear. Through deceleration reality becomes fiction, in this fiction the beauty of the world is suddenly revealed.

A performance piece contemplating on &#38;nbsp;physical and mental awareness, stretching time-perception, exploring movement and the image-driven overloadthat numbs our conciouness.

“Over the timespan of an hour, the performer sets a table, moving exhaustingly slow she generates a certain shift in perception within the spectators experience…the setting baths in the flashing light of a fast-edited series of pictures that explode of a television screen that is turned towards the performer: away from the spectators…after a while the reflective objects on the table slowly reveal the images content…

Research/ future work

Evelien Cammaert grew up in a traditional Japanese house, set in Flanders, Belgium. In the early 1990's, her father, an antique dealer of Japanese art, transformed a decayed farmhouse near Brussels into a Japanese dwelling, surrounded by a Japanese garden. He meticulously followed architectural traditions—adhering to scale, dimension, color, and material. This unique space profoundly shaped her artistic perception, awareness of architecture, light, and the relationship between culture, objects, nature, and human presence.

The notion of “Strange Home” encapsulates a dual tension: the Western fascination with Japan as an exoticized aesthetic ideal versus her own intimate, affective relationship to it. This research will critically examine how projections, historical narratives, and memory intersect—questioning authenticity, inheritance, and cultural transmission. Through experimentations and developing participatory and performative strategies, Evelien Cammaert aims to investigate how different perspectives and projections around this topic trigger reflexivity and connection when brought together.
